John Martin Loftus Obituary (1930

John Martin Loftus, July 21, 1930, died January 12th, 2026 at his home surrounded by family. Mr. Loftus was born to second generation Irish immigrants in the anthracite coal country of northeast Pennsylvania. Mr. Loftus graduated from high school in Cortland, New York, class of 1948. He served in the United States Airforce during the Korean War with the 34th B-26th bomber squadron. He graduated from LeMoyne College earning his BA in 1956. He earned his Juris Doctorate from Cornell Law School in 1959. After practicing Corporate Law at Rochester law firm Strang, Wright, Combs, Wiser & Shaw (1961), he opened a private practice in Scottsville in 1970 and continued serving the community until retiring in 2006. Mr. Loftus is predeceased by his father, Robert A. Loftus; mother, Rose Mary (O’Herron) Loftus; brother, Dr. William J. Loftus; and son, Joseph W. Loftus. Mr. Loftus is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dolores A. (Daily) Loftus; children, Ann E. (Paul) Triplett of Colleyville TX; Thomas R. (Rebecca) Loftus of Corinth VT; Mary R. (Thomas) Wedegaertner of Raleigh NC; Dawn C. Loftus Of Lynchburg VA; James P. (Nancy) Loftus of Virginia Beach VA ; John G. (Karen) Loftus of Penfield NY; Margaret K. (Jonathan Durham) Loftus of Corinth VT, 13 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Loftus and his wife have resided in their historic Rochester Street (Scottsville) home since 1963 and enjoyed being the third owners of the 1816 historic structure. In his retirement, Mr. Loftus enjoyed travelling, visiting his children, and spending time in his gardens. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. His family finds comfort in the fact that his legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love he shared, and the memories we will cherish forever. A funeral mass and celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wheatland Historical Society, 69 Main Street, Scottsville, NY 14546.
